A psychological
reaction that occurs after experiencing a highly stressing event (as
wartime combat, physical violence, or a natural disaster) outside
the range of normal human experience and that is usually
characterized by depression, anxiety, flashbacks, recurrent
nightmares, and avoidance of reminders of the event—abbreviation
PTSD; called also delayed-stress disorder, delayed-stress syndrome,
post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Even very
stressful events can cause PTSD, such as a bad divorce, a death, an
accident, etc. Because of the event one can find that they
cannot move forward in life, or in relationships. This
disorder can leave a person feeling stuck in life, as though there
is something blocking them to returning to the person they were
before the event. |
